The female holy monastery of Archangel Michael is the biggest and the most popular monastery of Thasos and it constitutes a pivotal pilgrimage.
It is built on a rim of a cliff, near the village Theologos and the view to the Aegean is really magnificent, giving the sense to the visitor that it suspends. In this place the eremite Luke, obeying the command of Archangel Michael, built in 1110 a.c a small church in which flowed holy water. According to the tradition, unfaithful Turks wanted to pollute the spring. Then it dried up with a miraculous way and flowed, and still flows, in a cave near the sea. The sacrilegious dropped dead.
After years, again miraculously, the Holy Nail ended up to the church. It is the Nail that was put in the right hand of Crucified Christ. The emperor Nikiforos Botaneiatis had dedicated it to the holy monastery of Filotheou at Mount Athos. After years in the place of the church the monastery was founded, as a glebe of the monastery Filotheou.
For Thasos and especially for the inhabitants of Theologos the Archangel Michael is their protector saint. The grace of Archangel and its uniqueness and blessing of the Holy Nail is a reason of the arrival of many pilgrims.
